At Zeal Ferry is the first new FBY novel to become available since the unfinished Wistanslow appeared in 1956. Set in Devon, in the opening years of the 20th century – the very time at which FBY was writing it, At Zeal Ferry gives a foretaste of many of the qualities that made Young’s later (and much longer) novels so compellingly readable. We see the author’s love of nature, music, mythology and much more in both narrative and dialogue in this compelling tale of jealousy, romance, misunderstanding, intrigue and tragedy – unresolved until the very last page and still leaving the reader wanting to know what will happen next – set within the rural community of Zeal St Mary. With an introduction by Society Chairman, Dr Michael Hall, At Zeal Ferry is an important addition to the collected works of Francis Brett Young. The launch of the book is accompanied by a short story competition – first prize £500 – see separate details.
